Howden Weekend for Heelwork To Music
Organiser: Lesley Bugler
When Lesley asked me to take the training weekend at Howden, I asked if she could arrange some decent weather to go with it…and dutifully, the sun shone in a beautiful blue sky for both days.
The good company and interesting conversations with the handlers made the weekend one to remember. The dogs displayed varying level of skills so it was wonderful to see the pleasure on people's faces as their dogs made progress throughout the weekend. I also noted the handlers were of different age groups, this confirms that Heelwork To Music is a sport for everybody regardless of their age (or that of their canine partner).
The music that seemed to have most appeal and inspire the handlers to energetic dance was the good old Rock `n' Roll numbers like Chaz And Dave's Hound Dog.
We were very fortunate that Lesley's vet allowed us to use her property. Outside was a huge well fenced in paddock that the dogs were allowed to run in freely while inside we worked in an ex mushroom growing building with a concrete floor. This was very successful, as dogs didn't slip at all. Although it was warm outside it was maybe a little cool inside for the spectators, but I think most wrapped up warmly,
During the day we held several sessions of pooling ideas, which were very useful with loads of thoughts on props and moves for singles routines. It was a fabulous friendly instructive weekend and we are all looking forward to the next one.
